Preschools in two cultures:

Case studies in London and Japan

Abstract

This study is looking anew at the reality in the today’s nursery classroom in Japan and England although there were a number of literature which were looking at the differences between two countries in the past.

However, nowadays the importance of the impact of globalization is increasingly recognized, including in the fields of education and child rearing. However, can we still observe the differences?

This dissertation will look at the actual nursery classroom by qualitative research. The reality is explored from four points of view, such as Child-child relationships, Teacher-child relationships, Child-parents relationships Teacher-parents relationships.

The findings showed that there actually seems to be a different idealised version of the child that society expected in each country that has different culture. However, the things we think of as objective differences are actually only created by society. It can also be said that there are no real differences in what is good for children. In other words, although teachers in the classroom actually see correctly what is good for children, they have to reluctantly follow the way that society wants.

Therefore, it revealed that there are various conflicts between teacher’s belief and actual practices that distorted by various social factor in both countries.
